Mastering the Art of Layering Patterns: 10 Expert Tips for Stunning Interior Design

I have been so inspired lately by pattern. I have been creating tons of patterns for our Spoonflower collections, and thinking about an upcoming renovation to a 75 year old farm house that I will be working on. Layering patterns and colors to create an antique, vintage look. So here are 10 tips to create the perfect, curated, layered look for your home.

1. Start with a Neutral Base: Begin with a neutral color palette for your walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces to provide a calming backdrop for your pattern play.

2. Mix Scale and Size: Experiment with patterns of different scales and sizes to create visual interest. Pair larger prints with smaller ones for balance.

3. Choose a Dominant Pattern: Select one standout pattern as your focal point and build around it with complementary designs. This helps anchor the space and gives it a cohesive look.

4. Use a Variety of Textiles: Incorporate a mix of textiles such as rugs, pillows, curtains, and upholstery to add depth and texture to the room.

5. Stick to a Color Scheme: Stick to a cohesive color scheme to tie the different patterns together. Choose a few key colors and use them consistently throughout the space.

6. Layer Different Textures: Combine different textures like velvet, linen, wool, and silk to enhance the richness of the design and prevent it from feeling flat.

7. Balance Bold with Subtle: Pair bold, statement-making patterns with more subtle, understated ones to avoid overwhelming the space. This creates a harmonious balance that's visually pleasing.

8. Consider the Architecture: Take into account the architectural features of the space when layering patterns. Use patterns to highlight and enhance these features rather than compete with them.

9. Experiment with Pattern Types: Mix and match different types of patterns, such as florals, stripes, geometrics, and abstracts, to add depth and personality to the room.

10. Don't Forget Negative Space: Leave some negative space in the room to allow the eye to rest and prevent the design from feeling too busy. This also helps to showcase the patterns you've carefully selected.

By following these tips, you can create a beautifully layered and visually captivating space that reflects your personal style and creativity. Happy decorating!
